-A Taste of Happiness- or
-The Symphony of Sugar -

Dear Diary,
It took years of selling chocolates out of my family’s old wagon to do it but I’ve finally made enough money to open up my own candy store, and in the perfect location too. This village I’ve opened shop in is a great place to settle and live. It’s got clean air, a nearby hot spring, friendly locals, and some of the hottest young ladies a guy could ever desire. In fact, across from my very store is a flower shop where the most beautiful woman works at. Every day, I look over the counter and see her watering and tending to her flowers. I haven’t met her yet and I don’t know her name, but I must invite her over for tea and candy soon. I wish to meet her so much.

Sincerely Simon Atlas, the proud owner of his new store
Written on the ninth day of the goose moon

The village grew tranquil as the last of daylight faded from earth. The shops were closed and children had gone into their houses. It was getting late, as the residence grew more tranquil.

Night had come all too quickly at Simon’s house. He and his guest sat across from each other as they sipped tea and conversed. The hours seemed to have flown by as the two of them got to know each other better.

As he soon learned from their talk, his visitor’s name was Naoko and as Simon had said himself, she was indeed a beautiful woman, possessing lovely earth brown skin, soft but radiant dark hair that streamed beyond her shoulders and brushed along her backside, and the most courteous hazel eyes that could befriend anybody in an instant. Compared to the other young ladies in the village, her figure was extraordinary, looking as though there wasn’t even a single calorie on her. For the past few years, she had been running the village’s flower shop, the perfect way to complement her love for flowers and gardening.

She was happy to come over once she read Simon’s invitation. Before arriving at his house, she squandered no effort to get ready for her visit. She took a nice, long bath to rid her of any soil, brushed her hair to it’s finest, and put on the best dress she had. It was a short-sleeved piece of clothing tailored from fine blue cloth with the border of her dress ending just above her feet. She looked absolutely lovely when wearing it.

Later at Simon’s House, the two of them drank tea as they shared a little about themselves. The conversation was going fairly well until he offered Naoko something to snack on.

“No thank you”, she replied politely, “I never eat sweets.”

Simon’s face was overcome with shock.

“You’ve never eaten sweets before?” , Simon asked out of astonishment.

“No… Never.” , answered Naoko having felt as though she had hurt his feelings. “Is there something wrong with that?”

“No… I suppose not, but how in the world do you go your entire life without candy or snacks”, asked Simon.

“Well… my parents are the biggest health nuts on earth”, she explained. “When I was little, they told me that eating sugar and snacks would cause me to blow up like a blimp and crush the village. As silly as it was though, I believed them and I swore I would never touch that stuff.”

“Your parents lied to you?” , Simon asked unbelievingly.

“It’s not like that” , rebutted Naoko, “they were just trying to protect me. Eventually when I got older, I realized that candy doesn’t actually do that to you, it just makes you fat and unhappy. That’s understandable, right?”

Simon didn’t respond. He was too stunned to do so. He would hardly believe the things he was hearing. Going through life without sugar? Candy making people unhappy? This poor woman had been fooled out of what could possibly be one of life’s greatest pleasures, and she didn’t even remotely seem to care.

He couldn’t allow her to continue like this. He had to somehow convince her that such treats were not the evil she believed to be, but how was he supposed to do that? Persuading her after all those years of lies would be no simple task.

“Me turning into a blimp”, she said as she chuckled, “as if that could really happen.”
Conveniently enough however, her words suddenly triggered forth an idea for Simon. He couldn’t believe he didn’t think of it sooner.

“I’m going to go fetch something from the storeroom”, he said with a slight eagerness. “This won’t take long.” With haste, he got out from his chair and went out of the room. Naoko simply sat in her chair confused.

“Was it something I said?”, she hollered out to him as she was left to herself. She sighed as she resumed to her cup of tea in wait. What was he getting at this time?

In a few minute’s time, he returned carrying a woven basket filled with little chocolates. He set it on the center of the tea table in front of Naoko.

“What’s this?”, Naoko asked looking at the basket.

“These are my Special Uplifting Chocolates”, answered Simon. “They were my best-selling candy back in my hometown. I didn’t think it would be very popular here, but I thought maybe you would like to try it.”

“But, all the things candy does to you…I’m sorry but I couldn’t possibly eat this stuff.”

“But this candy is different. This was made from my special formula. You could eat all you want and I promise you won’t gain even one pound.”

“You mean eating this candy of yours doesn’t make you fatter?”, inquired Naoko. “This must be a joke.”

“Oh but it’s not”, urged Simon. “All I ask is that you try just one and if you still don’t care for it, I’ll put the basket away.”

“I… I don’t know”, said a doubtful Naoko. “I’m not sure if I should.”

“Just think it over”, requested Simon. “While you do that, I’m going to get us some more tea. Simon got out of his chair once more and left to the kitchen.”

Naoko turned her attention back to the candy. Should she dare try this foul excuse for food? Her parents would’ve never approved of this. But then again, she was only asked to try one. Her curiosity getting the best of her, she placed her hand into the basket and took but a single piece then she took a sigh to ease her uncertainty before putting it into her mouth.

In mere seconds, Naoko’s face beamed with joy as the heavenly sweet substance melted in her mouth and coated her taste buds with delight. Her first encounter with the forbidden food and for that moment, she could not have remembered a time when her mouth was ever so pleased. But as the happiness was short-lived as the chocolate soon dissolved to nothingness. Feeling unsatisfied, she looked at the basket of chocolates and began to pressure herself. She took a second to hesitate grabbing into the basket for another piece as she put her own will power into perspective. She told herself she would only eat one and no more but at that moment, she was now being combated by her newfound sweet tooth and she was slowly losing.

“Perhaps one more”, she told herself as she reached into the basket, took out another piece and popped it into her mouth. Once again she was welcomed with the same delicious taste that had won her over before but before she knew it, it again ended all too quickly, leaving her unsatisfied with the measly two morsels she had scarfed down.

“I’ll have a few more and then I’ll stop”, she said reassuring her principals as she ventured into the basket again, this time with two hands. She was granted the grand taste of sugar once more.

A few minutes later, the basket was completely empty. A gluttonous Naoko sat in her chair pleasantly moaning and rubbing her tummy, licking her lips of the final minute remains of the chocolate she was unable to resist. It was so incredibly yummy although it left her a little thirsty. Where was Simon with that tea? He should’ve been back by now. Was he being held up by something? Deciding to go into the kitchen and look for him, she tried to get out of her chair but it seemed harder than usual. After having eaten all that sugar, leaving her seat seemed like such a chore but even so with a little extra effort, she struggled to get to her feet. Walking wasn’t much easier. All that chocolate she consumed was making her feel a little bloated and the pressure she was feeling made even the most routine task seem difficult, her body seeming to resist as she tried to walk forward. She continued onward only to be stopped in her tracks when she suddenly heard a strange sound coming from the most unlikely of places.

A gaseous hiss could be heard whispering from her body and growing louder, it soon echoed throughout the room. She was certainly bewildered but seconds later before she could even find a way to respond to it, she was greeted by an even-stronger sensation of bloating pressure, storming feverishly though her whole body. But then, a sight that astounded her more than the hissing or the bloating was what she saw next.

Before her very eyes, she was growing, her belly expanding and rounding out, looking as though she had gained nine months of pregnancy in a mere few seconds. But that wasn’t all, her whole body was swelling bigger, her trim waistline took forth and her modest bust was starting to bulge outward. The hem of her dress was rising well above her knees as she grew wider and the garment was beginning to fail to house her latest size. She looked down and saw her feet and legs vanish before her eyes, as she grew robustly rounder and bigger, her overblown stomach soon to be serving as her newest horizon in view.

“Oh my goodness“, gasped Naoko. “I can’t believe it. Mother and Father weren’t lying. I am blowing up!” Taking a moment to direct her attention from her burdening front, she soon found her hips and thighs pressing outward and the cheeks of her bottom swelling up to the size of ripe summer melons. In a few short moments, she had become tremendously wide and on the verge of only growing larger. Hapless to move, she desperately summoned a plea.

“Simon, help me”, she screamed. But even though her voice boomed loudly though the entire house, there was no response whatsoever. What in the world could’ve been keeping him at this time? Regardless, it was her only choice. All she could do was wait for his return and watch herself get larger until then.

Her arms had strayed away from the rest of her body as they were puffed many times their original size and no amount of her might allowed them to budge from place. Her breasts, having greatly swollen up like a pair of miniature beach balls, began to crowd around her neck and take over her chest. As for the rest of her, any traits of her petite body were inflating out of existence, her limber waist was plowing out to many its size and her hips were bulging swiftly at her left and right. Keeping herself standing upright was a challenge in itself as her legs had plumped over time and her knees had just sunk into her ballooning body leaving her to tend to a balancing act with her own stubby ankles. In doing so, Naoko was forced to summon her every effort all to keep herself from rolling forward and landing on top of her humongous front.

She had been blown into the shape of a giant, unstable sphere dominating much of the room with her troublesome size, shifting the tea table and it’s chairs to a corner of the room with every second of her swelling. She was next to helpless; her legs and arms having diminished to practically nothing and her body becoming too monstrously vast to move from her position. Every fiber of her dress had been strained over it’s ballooning wearer but luckily for her, the fine cotton fabric continued to hold it’s own by the growing woman. Unfortunately, the skirt had been hoisted too high and her underwear from beneath was no longer in the sanctuary of her dress, pulled tightly over the bottom half of her body. Surprisingly to her, her behemoth breasts were completely unaffected by the greater pressure bellowing her into a ball and they stuck out as a pair of absurd globes spread across her rounded chest.

But just as Naoko had succumbed into despair over her newest shape and size, Simon suddenly came into the room and glanced up at Naoko’s head atop her blimpish figure. He positioned himself in front of the woman unfazed with what she was going through, as if he had seen this before.

“Are you ok?”, he asked greeting her with a cheerful smile. Naoko’s response wasn’t quite as friendly.

“Simon, you lied”, Naoko yelled down at her host. “You told me this candy wouldn’t fatten me up.”

“Nonsense. I am no liar, responded Simon. My chocolates don’t make you fat, they inflate you like a balloon, which is an entirely different aspect.”

“A balloon? What convinced you to do that?”, asked Naoko. “I don’t want this.”

“Silly Naoko, try to understand what I’m doing for you”, requested Simon. “Perhaps if I told you a story, you’d get it. You see, every year back in my hometown, we celebrate our Summer Paper Parade while we construct giant balloons from wheat paper, fill them up with helium and let them hover over out little town, but I must say that’s only the beginning. During that celebration, I set up a booth and sell my Special Uplifting Chocolates to the people there and by the end of the day, the balloons we’d have would double. The ladies in my town love this festivity. They try to get bigger and bigger every year. Last time, I sold chocolate by the thousands. I swear the whole thing was incredible.”

Naoko was struck with disbelief. A festival where women love to get fatter? The story in itself was almost as outstanding as the fact that she had been inflated.

“What are you going to do with me now?” groaned Naoko.  “Please don’t give me any more candy. I can’t take it anymore.”

“Oh don’t be so stingy”, debated Simon. “Considering by that empty basket of chocolates you left on the table there, I figured you really enjoyed them. Nevertheless, once you stop inflating, I intend to take you to my storeroom where over a hundred kinds of my candy lay in wait to be eaten, from my barrels of rock candy to my big bag of goddess cheery lollipops. I insist that you try them all. “

Naoko moaned at the sound of it. The very sound of it made her feel as if she had already gained twenty pounds.

“I promise that by the end of the night, I’ll have you better acquainted with your sweet tooth. Trust me, I’m doing you a favor.”

“No, please, no more. There’s no joy in being fat”, she pleaded as Simon began to roll her to the doorway but Simon paid no mind to the swollen woman. He had work to do and he had only so much time to do it.

As the hours passed, Simon forcefully fed Naoko with more and more candy from each and every shelf. Naoko slowly deflated overnight but not before Simon had stuffed her full of half the candy in his storeroom. As dawn finally came around, Naoko was once again able to move, although her outstanding figure was gone and all that access sugar she was holding had provided her with a touch of plumpness. She would’ve been devastated except that she was much too preoccupied eating the rest of the sweets Simon had made. By the time she had gotten back to normal, all of that sampling had her longing for more of his sweets. Simon’s plan to convince her of the joys of sugar had worked, perhaps all too well.
Growing tired, he began to close the storeroom door behind him and left Naoko to continue eating. Naoko herself was all too content.

How could I ever have missed out on this?, she asked herself as she filled her mouth with more of Simon’s vanilla bars.

Many weeks later…

Dear Diary,
Good news arrives. The Summer Paper Parade will be coming to my old hometown soon in a few days. I intend to head up there for a few days, set up my booth and sell my Special Uplifting Chocolates once more. I’m striving to make double the profit I made last year, but to do that I’ll need some help. Luckily my number one customer, Naoko has agreed to accompany me this year and assist me in selling the chocolates. If all goes well, I’ll rake in enough money to open another store and sell my newest candy, Super Blueberry Extract.

Not my best story but I tried to fine tune it a little, unlike my last story.

This style has been working well for my first few stories but lately the whole concept is getting a little old. Maybe it's time to try something new.

This story captivated me from the very beginning. I found the prologue/epilogue diary entries refreshingly unique. Your ability to capture the sense of emotions and atmosphere was fabulous, and the story itself was charming and well-written. Read this and smile, my friend, for this is a mighty fine tale!
